The incident unfolded on Tuesday, and it took a team of rescue professionals two hours to bring Wyatt to safety after he slipped off a ledge. Wyatt had been trying to make way for tourists who were taking photos when he lost his grip and began his terrifying descent.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Wyatt also recounted the events leading up to the fall. He explained that he had been squatting down and gripping a rock with one hand to allow people to take pictures. Suddenly, he lost his balance and began to fall. Wyatt’s memory of the immediate aftermath of the fall is hazy, but he remembers being transported in an ambulance, helicopter, and airplane.
Rescue and Resilience
Despite the severity of the fall, Wyatt displayed a remarkable spirit of resilience. He suffered multiple injuries, including nine broken vertebrae, a ruptured spleen, a broken hand, and a collapsed lung. However, after receiving medical treatment, the hospital has already discharged Wyatt.
Wyatt’s rescue was a complex operation involving numerous emergency workers. The Grand Canyon National Park’s team employed rappelling techniques to retrieve him from the challenging terrain. The terrain made a helicopter rescue impractical.
Safely Home
Wyatt’s father, Brian Kauffman, expressed profound gratitude for the rescuers’ efforts, emphasizing the relief of being able to bring his son home safely. The Kauffman family was on a trip to the Grand Canyon when the incident occurred. Despite the harrowing experience, they are determined to focus on creating new positive memories as they embark on a road trip back home to North Dakota.
