Black Stars to 10th successive AFCON

Semenyo and Nuamah inspire Black Stars to 10th successive AFCON – The Black Stars of Ghana have clinched their spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a hard-fought victory against the Central African Republic on Thursday, September 7.

In a thrilling match held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Ghana emerged victorious with a final score of 2-1, securing their place as one of the top two teams from Group E in the qualifying series.

CAR Drew First Blood

The early stages of the game saw the Central African Republic, also known as CAR, dominating the play, and their efforts paid off in the 25th minute. Louis Mafouta of CAR managed to slip past Ghana’s defense, and his clever touch took the ball beyond the reach of Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. With an open net in front of him, Mafouta calmly slotted the ball home, giving CAR the lead.

Before CAR’s opening goal, Goduine Koyalipou had forced Ati-Zigi into making an excellent save, showing the attacking prowess of the Central African side.

The Come Back

The Black Stars struggled to create scoring opportunities from open play, but their fortunes changed just before halftime. A free-kick awarded to Ghana just outside the 18-yard box provided the perfect opportunity. Mohammed Kudus took the responsibility and expertly placed the ball past CAR’s goalkeeper Geoffrey Lembet, leveling the score.

Both teams entered halftime with one goal each, setting the stage for an intense second half.

The second half unfolded much like the first, with CAR pressing forward and Ghana’s defense standing firm. CAR had a near miss with a volley that sailed just wide of Ghana’s goal, while Salis Abdul Samed’s attempt from an Ernest Nuamah pass was gathered safely by Lembet.

However, it was the 19-year-old sensation, Ernest Nuamah, who would be the hero of the day. He capitalized on a square pass from Antoine Semenyo, finding the back of the net and sealing a crucial victory for Ghana.

AFCON Spot Secured

With this victory, the Black Stars have secured their place in the AFCON for the impressive 10th consecutive time. Ghanaians and the football community are undoubtedly celebrating this achievement, but there is still work to do.

Following their successful qualification, Ghana’s next challenge is a friendly match against Liberia, scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium. This friendly encounter will provide the team with an opportunity to fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming AFCON tournament.

Ghana’s journey to AFCON 2023 has been marked by determination and skill, and fans will be eagerly anticipating their performance on the grand stage of African football.
