Burna Boy Criticizes Lack of Substance in Afrobeats Music – Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy has voiced his concerns about the lack of depth and substance in much of the music from the genre. The Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer expressed his views during an interview with Apple Music, where he candidly discussed his perspective on Afrobeats.
Speaking with host Zane Lowe, Burna Boy expressed his belief that a significant portion of Afrobeats songs lacks meaningful content. He attributed this deficiency to the fact that many artists lack genuine “life experience,” resulting in songs that he described as being about “nothing.”
What he said
“Half of them, 90 per cent of them, have almost no real-life experiences that they can understand,” he stated during the discussion. “That’s why you hear most Nigerian music, African Music, or Afrobeats, as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing.”
While he acknowledged that the music creates an enjoyable atmosphere, Burna Boy emphasized that life is not just about having an “amazing time” and that genuine substance should be present in artistic expression.
Social Media Reactions
Unsurprisingly, Burna Boy’s comments ignited a wave of reactions from fans and social media users. Some criticized him for what they perceived as a lack of empathy toward the struggles faced by Nigerians. One Twitter user questioned, “Him talking about substance, what has he said about the hardship we’ve been through in Nigeria?”
On the other hand, there were those who sided with Burna Boy’s viewpoint, praising his candidness and emphasis on storytelling in music. One supporter noted, “What Burna said is the truth. He tells story, and that should be the essence of music.”
Regardless of the mixed reactions, Burna Boy’s outspoken nature and willingness to address controversial topics have solidified his reputation as an artist who does not shy away from expressing his opinions.
In other news related to Burna Boy, he recently released his latest single, “Cheat On Me,” featuring Dave. The track is a preview of his upcoming seventh album, ‘I Told Them,’ which is set to be released on August 25.
